David Levine
David Levine est né à Brooklyn, New York, en 1926 et a étudié à la Brooklyn Museum of Art School, au Pratt Institute, à la Tyler School of Art de l’université Temple à Philadelphie et à l’Eighth Street School de New York auprès de Hans Hoffman.
Pendant plus de quatre décennies, Levine a diverti les lecteurs de The New York Review of Books avec ses portraits souvent satiriques de personnalités publiques. Comptant parmi les artistes les plus célèbres des États-Unis, David Levine a reçu de nombreuses distinctions, à commencer par le prix de la Fondation Louis Comfort Tiffany en 1955, puis les prix Isaac Maynard, Julius Hallgarten et Thomas B. Clarke, tous décernés par la National Academy of Design ; le prix George Polk Memorial, une bourse Guggenheim, le prix Childe Hassam Purchase (Académie américaine des arts et des lettres), le prix John Pike Memorial et la médaille d’or de l’Académie américaine et de l’Institut des arts et des lettres en 1993. Sur la scène internationale, David Levine a reçu la Légion d’honneur française et le prix Thomas Nast à Landau, en Allemagne.
David Levine a exposé à la Davis Gallery de New York de 1954 à 1963, date à laquelle il a rejoint la Forum Gallery. Outre les nombreuses expositions personnelles qu'il a présentées à la Forum depuis lors, David Levine a exposé à Paris, Stuttgart, Washington, Munich, Oxford (Angleterre), Beverly Hills et Columbus, en Géorgie.
Les œuvres de David Levine figurent dans les collections du Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, du Cleveland Museum of Art, du Brooklyn Museum, du Newark Museum, de la Bibliothèque du Congrès et de la National Portrait Gallery, des San Francisco Fine Arts Museums, de la National Portrait Gallery d'Angleterre et du Metropolitan Museum of Art.
