Saul Steinberg
Saul Steinberg (1914—1999) est un dessinateur, illustrateur et artiste graphique célèbre pour son humour visuel, ses lignes élégantes et son regard ironique sur la société moderne. Né à Ramnicu Sarat, en Roumanie, il grandit à Bucarest avant d’étudier l’architecture au Politecnico di Milano en Italie.
Pendant les années 1930, il publie déjà des caricatures dans des revues italiennes. En raison des lois antisémites du régime fasciste, il quitte l’Italie en 1941 et émigre aux États-Unis. Peu après, il commence une collaboration historique avec le magazine The New Yorker, pour lequel il réalisera des dizaines de couvertures et des centaines de dessins devenus emblématiques.
Son style mélange dessin, écriture, cartographie imaginaire, satire et abstraction. Steinberg transformait souvent des objets ordinaires, des villes ou des personnages en systèmes de signes pleins d’esprit. Il brouillait les frontières entre art contemporain, illustration et bande dessinée.
L’une de ses œuvres les plus célèbres est la couverture du New Yorker intitulée View of the World from 9th Avenue (1976), une représentation humoristique et déformée de la vision new-yorkaise du monde.
Durant sa carrière, Steinberg expose aussi dans des musées majeurs, notamment au Museum of Modern Art et au Whitney Museum of American Art. Son travail a influencé aussi bien les illustrateurs que les artistes conceptuels et les designers graphiques.
Aujourd’hui, Saul Steinberg est considéré comme l’un des plus grands dessinateurs du XXe siècle, à la croisée de l’art, de la caricature et du design graphique.
